Living With Depression One Song At A Time

Recent Musical Listening & What’s Going On

I’ve been digging into some new and not so new music lately. One of the big one’s is violinist Hilary Hahn’s collaboration with the composer Hauschk. It’s really amazing stuff. They’ve made a super cool video for the song “Bounce Bounce.”Bounce Bounce Video Image

Also, Denver Colorado’s The Lumineers. This folk/Americana band makes some infectious foot-stomping music. It’s really hard to sit still while listening to it. My daughter keeps telling me, two hands on the wheel while we are driving and listening The Lumineer’s eponymous debut album.

Lastly on the new music front, Chromatics. This band makes electronica influenced music that reminds me of the best elements of Portishead. The Portland, Oregon band recently released “Kill For Love,” and I’m delving into this 90 minute long record now. The name seems indicative of the way Chromatics encompasses many sounds and layers. Good stuff, indeed.

As far as what’s going on goes, the real announce is going to come later this week. But it’s cool. And I’m amazingly excited.

I’ve been reading The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything. There are a great many things like about this book. What’s a really key part of of the book is that it’s not only the finding your passion part, that’s important. It’s the creativity and the finding, what he calls your tribe—your community— that are so vital.

Ken Robinson is really one of my favorite thinkers right how. His TED talks are wonderful. I’ve embedded one of them above. Really check them out. They might seem long, but are worth the investment in time.

Poliça is an amazing band that’s gaining much deserved exposure. The band was just on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (see above video). Lead singer Channy Leaneagh not only uses auto-tune to manipulate the tones of her voice, she uses it to play her voice like an instrument. As a lyricist, Channy Leaneagh, creates songs with a meditative quality and marries perfectly with the music. The songs aren’t stories as much as they are snapshops, images captured in life’s moments.Couple her vocals and lyrics with two drummers and a really great bass player makes for some really propulsive and ethereal music.

Poliça debut album, “Give You The Ghost,” came out this winter and instantly became a favorite of mine. Sadly for me the band is playing in Albany, NY (about 3 hours from where I love) tonight and I’m not there. They were in Rochester last night, which is closer, but I missed that show too.
